Why is the certification program
in Geriatric Pharmacy Practice not being offered through the Board
of Pharmaceutical Specialties?
Discussions were held with the Board
of Pharmaceutical Specialties (BPS) and the American Pharmaceutical
Association (APhA) throughout the development of the certification
program in geriatric pharmacy practice. The key issue has been
whether geriatric pharmacy practice qualifies as a "specialty"
within the definition of BPS.
The Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties
has limited its focus to recognizing specialty certification programs
for pharmacists. In early 1995, BPS issued an "Agenda for
Action" which included a proposal to broaden the mission
of BPS to include recognition of certification programs with a
generalist focus. However, this proposal was not adopted and BPS
continues to focus on pharmacy specialties.
The certification program in geriatric
pharmacy practice is considered a "generalist" program.
It is intended to recognize those pharmacists who demonstrate
knowledge of geriatric pharmacotherapy. and who have the knowledge
and skills required to provide pharmaceutical care to the elderly.
These pharmacists might practice in hospital, community or long-term
care settings.
Discussions will continue with BPS
and APhA to explore avenues for cooperation in certification.
