CCGP mandates periodic recertification of an individual who is certified as an assurance to the public and the profession that certified practitioners undergo periodic evaluation of their specialized knowledge and skill. The intent of this process is to ensure that the certificant at least maintains, or ideally enhances, his or her level of competence in geriatric pharmacy practice. A competent geriatric pharmacist must keep pace with changes in technology and available drugs for diagnosis and treatment.
The goal of CCGP is to foster continuing competence of Certified Geriatric Pharmacists, so that designated levels of knowledge, skills, and ability in geriatric pharmacy practice are demonstrated not only at the time of initial certification but throughout an individual's professional career.
In pursuit of that goal, recertification is required every five (5) years, in accordance with processes established by the CCGP Board of Commissioners. The 5-year period was developed and approved by the CCGP Board when the program was launched in 1997. This timeframe is considered to reflect the rate of change in geriatric pharmacy practice while being practically attainable.
Recertification may be achieved either by retaking the CGP examination or by means of the Professional Development Program. Continuing education for the Professional Development Program (PDP) is provided by the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists and ASHP. Live professional development programs are also available at certain ASCP and ASHP meetings.
Certified Geriatric Pharmacists may also recertify by taking the CGP examination. The examination should be scheduled and taken prior to the end of the certification period.
