Recertification by Professional Development Program
Recertification through the Professional Development Program requires the completion of a total of 75 hours of designated continuing education credits over the five-year certification cycle. Only CE credits that have been designated by CCGP may be used for recertification. The American Society of Consultant Pharmacists and ASHP are the two approved continuing professional development providers for recertification of Certified Geriatric Pharmacists.
The continuing pharmacy education credit that is approved by CCGP for the Professional Development Program is also approved by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). Thus, certificants in the U.S. who complete CPE credits for purposes of recertification can use those same credits for maintenance of pharmacist licensure.
CCGP recommends completing continuing education credits each year, rather than waiting until near the end of the cycle to complete most of the CE credits. The CE programs approved for CGP recertification have an expiration date of six months from the time of release. Thus, obtaining 75 credit hours of CE in a period of 6 - 12 months is ikely to be very difficult, if not impossible. It is best to plan ahead and obtain approved CE credits throughout the five-year certification cycle.
A policy adopted by the CCGP Board of Commissioners requires that Certified Geriatric Pharmacists who recertify on or after January 1, 2019, and who wish to recertify through the Professional Development Program, must have completed at least 30 credit hours toward the program no later than three (3) years after the prior certification or recertification.
NOTE: The Certified Geriatric Pharmacist who is renewing by the Professional Development Program should notify CCGP when all 75 credit hours of the PDP have been completed by sending an e-mail to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
